Myth
People with mental illnesses either cannot hold a job or tend to be second-rate employees when they do have a job.
Truth
Productivity at a job depends on how good of a match a job is for an employee, whether or not that employee suffers from mental illness. Studies by the National Institute of Mental Health show that there are no differences in productivity when people with mental illnesses are compared to those without. Throughout history, people with serious mental illness have contributed enormously to politics, culture, academics, athletics, business, art and science.
